It is commonly known that mobile industry is rapidly developing nowadays. The smartphones have also taken their important place in the range of possibilities provided by the mobile application developers. In this respect it's difficult to overrate the role of Symbian operating system. People that are familiar to the underlying mechanisms of Symbian operating system activity affirm that the system is responsible for the stimulation and improvement of the efficient cooperation of all the smartphone technologies. The quantity of smartphones that run Symbian OS is augmenting with time, and nowadays their amount is considerably higher than 32 million. Though the majority of end consumers don't pay specific attention to what operating system is installed to their cell phone, it's truly essential to understand that the operating system has a significant influence on the method of operation of the smartphone and all the software installed. The role of operating system on a smartphone can be briefly explained by fulfilling the below mentioned tasks: - Firstly, the system should make it simpler for the application of the smartphone to use the hardware and the network of the phone; - Moreover, the significant task of OS on a cell phone is to avoid conflicts between various applications. If there are a great variety of applications on the smartphone, there is a need for the most sophisticated OS. It concerns particularly the case when the software on the cell phone is provided by different sources, for instance: - Applications from the OS supplier - Applications from the producer of the cell phone - Applications from the network operator - Applications from the corporate information technologies department for the mobile phones that are applied for business purposes - Applications from the third parties - Purchased or downloaded applications. Taking into account that the developers of the applications are particularly interested in having their software installed on the smartphones of various models from various producers, it's rather understandable that the software developers concentrate on the APIs (application programming interfaces) given by the operating system, but not on the phone networks and hardware. It is much more beneficial to develop the applications that can be applied on a wide variety of mobile phones and networks. The differences between the phones and networks are taken into account by the OS, but not by the software developers. In such a way, the developers of applications can be certain that their software initially invented for smartphones from a certain manufacturer can be easily applied at the smartphones from other manufacturers, usually without any need for changes to the mentioned applications. |
